History

The Children's Hospital was founded in 1872 at 9 Upper Buckingham Street by a group of charitable people headed by Mrs. Ellen Woodlock, helped by her close friend Sarah Atkinson. The hospital opened with 8 beds. [3]

In 1876, the growing success of the hospital prompted the governing committee to invite the Religious Sisters of Charity to take over the running of the hospital. [3]

In May 1879 the lease at 9 Upper Buckingham Street expired and with a bequest from Mrs. Simpson the sisters purchased 15 Temple Street £2,500 and on 17 June 1879, the new hospital was opened with 21 beds.
